ZINE [Noun \ˈzēn\] “magazine” especially: a noncommercial, often homemade or online, publication usually devoted to specialized and often unconventional subject matter (ex: a punk zine or a feminist zine).
Zines are the epitome of DIY culture and it’s no surprise that LA has more than its fair share of zinesters. Somewhere between craft, type, collage, and comics lie zines, and more events are taking place each year across the country to celebrate this medium. Even Unique LA got into the action with a DIY workshop (hosted by the Urban Craft Center and LA Zine Fest) to give attendees the chance to try their hand at cutting & pasting the good ol’ fashioned way – sans Photoshop!
One of the coolest-looking events this year is taking place on February 19 from 11 am – 5 pm at the Spring Arts Tower, which is upstairs from The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles. The 2012 LA Zine Fest boasts a pretty rad list of exhibitors, plus panels, workshops, and an after party. (If you haven’t been to a crafty/DIY after party in LA, now would be the time to do it!) Check out their site and plan to head to the City of Angels next month for this super hip event. If you can’t make it to LA, check out your own local zine culture for events (Chicago, Philly, etc.) or start your own in the spirit of DIY!
