Vacations with teenagers…
can be a bit of a chore if you’re a parent (and a bit of a drag if you’re a teenager!). However, we’re here to help make vacations with teenagers not only painless, but a downright good time.
Family-friendly destinations might skew a little young for adolescents, and taking a walking tour of a historical site might bore them stiff (no offense to all the young history buffs out there). Meanwhile, Mardi Gras might sound great to your 17 year old boy, but it could possibly be a little advanced for him! Here are some ideas for vacations with teenagers that will please everyone in the family.
New York City
Ah, the Big Apple. As one of the most culturally forward and diverse cities in the world, it has everything and more for visitors of all ages. There’s plenty of shopping on 5th Avenue for girls, Broadway shows and television studios for the culturally inclined, Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden for sports fans, one-of-a-kind sights like the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and Ground Zero, and more! People from 1 to 100 will have no trouble enjoying a jam-packed visit to NYC.
Yosemite National Park
It’s hard to pick just one place in California to recommend, but Yosemite won out with its amazing views and hikes in one of the most beautiful locations on the Gold Coast. Natural wonders like Half Dome, Bridalveil Falls, El Capitan, and Mirror Lake await the outdoor enthusiast!
Thinking of going global? Get their feet wet with European travel in what’s generally a pretty tourist-friendly town – London! Plus, if your family is new to international travel, knowing the language is a great way to acclimate them to a new place. There’s countryside to roam, fish n’ chips to eat, tons of sights like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Eye of London, and more! If you seek memorable vacations with teenagers, hopping across the pond would be the experience of a lifetime.
Take them sailing. Seriously. There isn’t a single person on the planet who doesn’t look awesome with the wind whipping their hair as they skim over the waves with a cool beverage in hand and boat shoes on their feet (and we know how much appearances matter to teens!) Teenage preps love sailing, teenage punks love sailing, teenage jocks love sailing – we promise. Everyone likes sailing. Go sailing. The New England coast has breathtaking views and would be the perfect getaway for those searching for vacations with teenagers to take without breaking the bank.
Costa Rica is a shockingly affordable destination for those looking to walk on the wild side. With world-class surf, inexpensive lodging, and a tropical climate, this would definitely give your family something to brag about at the lunch table. You can easily “splurge” on luxury amenities like massages or surf lessons and be surprised at how far your dollars go.
There’s a reason that people of all ages from all corners of the world have “Visit Paris” on their bucket lists. Why not surprise your family with a trip to the City of Lights? A Paris vacation with teens would be an once-in-a-lifetime trip that you can experience together while they’re old enough to soak it in, but young enough for you to enjoy with them. No one ever forgets their first trip to Paris, so consider going big.
It’s easy, it’s close, it’s Hawaii! The ultimate American tropical getaway where you can speak English, spend dollars, and relax, relax, relax. There is surfing for your athlete, tanning for your gals, swimming for everyone, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, shopping, sightseeing, windsurfing… the list goes continues. Climb a volcano! Surf Pipe! Eat at Duke’s! Shop at the Aloha Swap Meet! Visit Pearl Harbor! Hawaii vacations with teens are no-brainers.
You might be hearing some moaning and groaning with this suggestion, but coming from someone who grew up in the DC metro area, this recommendation is solid for many reasons. First of all, history is awesome, whether they want to admit it or not. Every American student who has the opportunity to visit where our country has taken shape over the last 400 years should count themselves fortunate. Vacations with teens can definitely be fun AND educational, and our nation’s capital is the perfect spot to find both in spades. Sure, there’s the regular museums of history and science, but there’s also the Newseum (dedicated to the history of journalism), the Spy Museum (self-explanatory and TOTALLY AWESOME), the Verizon Center to catch a Caps or Wizards game, the Air & Space Museum, world-class shopping in Georgetown… we could go on.
No “Suggested Vacations With Teenagers” list would be complete without Disney World in Florida. Disney World was made for convenient travel! There are amenities for all ages, meaning it’s easy to please Mom, Dad, and the entire tribe. The weather is warm, the park is big, and while you can find yourself opening your wallet more than you’re used to, a little budgeting ahead of time will keep you on the fast lane to fun.
