There’s more to college life than boring classes, snazzy dorm art, and end of semester parties. Snacks make up an integral part of the college experience, and how else could you get through cramming for that biology final without some tasty treats along the way?

Luckily for us all, there’s a podcast that can help shape your snack schedule and guide you on the ultimate journey of treatdom – Mike and Tom Eat Snacks! The MATES podcast is Michael Ian Black (of Wet Hot American Summer fame) and Tom Cavanagh (Ed, the bowling alley lawyer – anyone?!) and together they have formed the ultimate voice in snacking today. From York Peppermint Patties to Chex Mix, no snack is safe once it’s been through the PER system. They pick. They eat. They rate. The snack is never the same.

Just to mix things up on Mike and Tom Eat Snacks, every once in a while they’ll throw in the Wacko Snacko, in which listeners (referred to as viewers-who-aren’t-viewers) recommend unusual combinations like Keebler Cheese & Peanut Butter Crackers with Pepsi or Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa (episode 13) or Planters Mixed Nuts (not the wackiest, but still snacktastic!). Occasionally they’ll branch out from the standard Cheetos or Almond Joys to explore more cultural snacks, like Japanese Kit Kats or edamame. Really, there’s no limit to the snack insanity.

MATES is recommended for college-age or above, and you can listen free on iTunes!

Staying fashionably green is now even easier with WeWood! If you go bonkers for bark, these eco-friendly wooden watches are hailed as some of the coolest wrist pieces around by blogs galore. With Italian roots and a retail location in Los Angeles, WeWood is the brainchild of a “shoe dude who loves watches and two eco-smart entrepreneurs with a crush of the environment”. Sustainability is the name of the game with their “One for One” tree-planting partnership with American Forests; in fact, in the first three months alone they planted 5,000 trees! American Forests’ goal is to plant 100 million trees by 2020, and with the way WeWood watches continue to fly off the shelves, we’re pretty sure they’re going to meet their goal.

WeWood use a variety of gorgeous and durable woods for all of their collections and even goes the extra mile to make them splashproof- perfect for the working “woodista”! Initially marketed as men’s watches, they’ve expanded to women’s chic designs as well (much to the delight of all here at Wheatpaste). In fact, we’re so wood-crazy that we’d like to recommend some affordable art options to pair with your WE!

Available as both reusable wall decals and stretched canvas wall art, Brian Everett’s “Wood Grain Type” boasts a subtle wooden background, perfect for the rustic type-lover and smashingly paired with the Limited Edition WeWood Jupiter Beige! Another fave is Rachel Caldwell’s “Jackalope Jump” with a seriously rad bark pattern – we think it would go perfectly with WeWood’s Date Beige.

Diggin’ the darker Date Brown/Army? Snag Jessica Swift’s “My Secret Life” for a multi-tone tree experience! All Wheatpaste products are made in the USA and printed with non-toxic inks, so you can stay green with us too.

“Life is too short to drink bad wine and wear ugly temporary tattoos.”

-Tattly founder Tina Roth Eisenberg

If there was ever a product that filled a need we didn’t know we had, it’s Tattly! Founder Tina (best known for her blogger identity swissmiss) is no stranger to great design, and when her daughter came of the temporary tattoo age, she was disappointed with the “Clip Art gone Tattoo” selection of generic-looking characters. What’s a savvy design mom to do? Create your own company, of course! Thus, Tattly was born, and we thank her for it.

Just when you think you’ve seen the best in the collection, there’s always another new release or cheeky hack that makes us LOL. (Hacks are when you mash up multiple designs for something unexpected and new – shades of Girl Talk!) With designs from over 40 artists, there’s bound to be at least a couple Tattlys that tickle your design fancy!

As you can see from our previous post, many of us here at Wheatpaste aren’t strangers to going under the needle for some real ink, but even so, we love sporting the kitschy patterns created by some of our fave artists – even some that we already know and love! Lisa Congdon is a fine artist and illustrator with some of the cutest Tattly collections to date, and you can find her work on our sister site Oopsy daisy, Fine Art for Kids as well.

Check out the below video for some simply adorbz ideas on how to make Tattly your own. Unique art doesn’t just have to be on walls – slap some on your skin and rock on!

Both girl-fronted groups have been rockin’ our faces off with their latest albums Strange Mercy and w h o k i l l (both on 4AD Records) since their 2011 releases. We were lucky enough to catch their April 18 show at the San Diego House of Blues and snap a couple pics of the sets!

Annie Erin Clark (aka St. Vincent) has a shock of wild dark hair and a slender build that lends itself more to a poetess than a stereotypical rockstar, but that didn’t stop her from crowd surfing into the rabid crowd and belting out tunes with a gusto not often seen in the current state of indie rock. The tUnE-yArDs brought the pop with their experimental style that kept the crowd moving and bobbing gleefully.

It’s no secret that the present condition of music is at best a hodgepodge of innovative experimentation and at worst overrun with homemade loops blending together into a never-ending death spiral of insanity, so it’s always shockingly refreshing to come across music that’s truly thoughtful, provoking, and just plain fun! St. Vincent and the tUnE-yArDs are both touring the world with no end in sight, so catch them if you can. Your ears will thank you.

It’s no secret that we here at Wheatpaste love unique wall art, but there are plenty of people around the world who bring their love of art to a whole new level. Tattoo art has evolved into a genre in itself, and whether you’ve got one or one hundred, quality counts when it’s not going anywhere!

The arts culture of Southern California spans from cars to film to street art, but no art form is quite as dynamic as art on skin. In our opinion, San Diego is home to some of the premiere ink shops in the country and even the world. We’ve scooted around town and scouted what we think are some of the top San Diego tattoo shops practicing their art today!

A new kid in town, Buju Tattoo is one of the only female-owned San Diego tattoo shops, and the work walking out of their shop front in Mission Hills absolutely sizzles. Other notables include South Park’s Full Circle Tattoo, the dynamic duo of Avalon & Avalon II, and the noted Guru Tattoo in Pacific Beach (dare we say a diamond in the rough of the PB tattoo scene?).

As patrons to both Flying Panther Tattoos & Gallery in Golden Hill and Seven Seas Tattoo in downtown San Diego, they both hold special places in our hearts, and for good reason! There are good tattoos, bad tattoos, and next level off-the-chain totally epically amazing tattoos. The artists at Flying Panther and Seven Seas are wildly accomplished in their craft, and most of them carry out their artistic talents to non-moving 2D work as well, with plenty of art shows and cultural events throughout the Baja to Los Angeles area.

We already knew that we were lucky to live in SoCal for a multitude of reasons, but with the plethora of absolutely epic San Diego tattoo shops, we are blown away at the artistic talent in our fair city. If you’re on the fence about taking the ink plunge, check out some of the shops mentioned here and see if your jaw isn’t dropping as you flip through their portfolios. Godspeed to all on their body art journeys!

It’s no longer a hip, underground thing to eat off food trucks – now, it’s just hip. Any self-respecting cool cat finds themselves frequenting these on-the-go establishments, who, due to tight space and a slowly saturating market, often have to rely on some serious innovation to lure in hungry masses. In our opinion, this means food trucks often dish out more epic cuisine than their stationary counterparts!

Austin, Texas is ground zero for live music, art, culture, and now food trucks. Here, they aren’t “food trucks”, they’re food trailers. These “trailer parks” are littered all across the city between vintage shops and dive bars with every type of cuisine under the sun. We were lucky enough to sample some of the top selections during SXSW while the truck and trailer brigade was out in full force, and based on the huge number of blogs dedicated to the food during SXSW, we weren’t the only ones impressed by Austin’s dining.

Of all the food trucks, our top pick has to be the absolutely divine Korean BBQ at Chi’lantro, whose California Kimchi pork burrito kept us coming back and begging for just a little more, just a taste, please! More Asian delight was had at the famous East Side King trailers behind a few local watering holes; steamed pork buns and fusion tacos at their finest. Hey Cupcake! kept the goods coming with gigantic treats sporting names like John Lemon and Michael Jackson.

Honestly, the list of amazing, mind-blowing, simply incredible food trucks in Austin could keep us here all day. Austin already boasts itself as the Live Music Capital of the World – dare we bestow the title of Food Truck Capital as well? We dare! Don’t take our word for it; next time you find yourself in the Lone Star State, head to Austin and give your tastebuds some of the good stuff.

Independent music lovers, unite! This Saturday marked the 5th Annual Record Store Day, which is (according to Wikipedia) the “most popular music holiday in the world”. Rad! It takes place each year on the third Saturday in April, and is observed not just in the USA, but in Canada, France, Germany, the UK, Japan, etc. with hundreds of domestic and global independent record stores participating.

Record Store Day kicked off in 2007 to celebrate the art of music, and in those days only around 10 special records were released for the holiday. Last year alone saw participation from over 600 artists ranging from the Beastie Boys to Deftones doing in-store showcases, along with hundreds of exclusive releases from Lady Gaga, the Decemberists, Pinback, and Adele just to name a few. It’s even recognized as a city-wide event in New York, and this year’s official ambassador is Iggy Pop!

No matter what corner of the earth you live in, Record Store Day is comin’ your way as it continues to promote independent record stores across the globe. Be sure to peep their website to get updates on next year’s shenanigans and exclusive releases!

On Saturday, April 14th, Will Ferrell came to our beautiful land of Saint Diago (San Diego for you non-Anchorman obsessed friends) to raise money for a very noble cause, and our adventurous founders got to participate. Will even signed some of our awesome Wheatpaste Posters that Stick to auction at the event. Cancer for College is a non-profit corporation run by Will’s close friend and college buddy Craig Pollard. Craig, himself, is a cancer survivor- and he’s made it his mission to help raise college funds for cancer survivors and amputees. College can definitely take a backseat in expenses when costs fighting cancer mount up.

Will and Craig have teamed up, yet again, to find a way to help raise money for this noble cause. The latest event involved two double decker buses, and what San Diego has on tap- craft beer! Tom and Karen, GreenBox’s founders, got to join the fun and have a few laughs. Even San Diego’s mayor, Jerry Sanders, stopped by in support of the cause.

So far, Cancer for College has provided over $1.5 million in scholarships to nearly 900 cancer survivors through many events similar to this. So, raise your glass for a toast to Craig Pollard and Will Ferrell- changing people’s lives.

At the end of the week, we like to give props to some rad people highlighting the local SoCal scene, and this week we’re diggin’ Austin Nelson’s Instagram. A musician-come-photographer from Charleston, Austin is currently an MFA candidate at Pratt and has contributed to Interview Magazine and Vogue. His Instagram is chock-full of goodies from ‘round these parts – from coastal San Diego to the blistering sun of Palm Desert, his Instagram highlights art, architecture, and the unique landscape of the Golden State.

Yes, we know we’re lucky to live here. Yes, the weather lives up to the hype. Yes, we can get from the Pacific Ocean to the desert to a mountain range in a day. But Austin, why romanticize it? We have managed to avoid the traffic and smog of L.A. and your photos just make San Diego look so… epic. Sure, we have our fair share of tourists, but if more people get a look at your photos and see at how good we really have it… the consequences could be dire.

More cars! More people! Up would be down, black would be white, and soon us locals would have to become California expats. So Austin, while we think you’re a totally dope photographer and we dig your style, next time you come to California, how about you keep it to yourself. Deal?
