Flatstock 33 at SXSW

There are few types of art more awesome than gig posters. We’re already huge suckers for screenprinting and unique wall art over here at Wheatpaste, but Flatstock 33 at this year’s SXSW took our love to a whole new level. With artists that we already know and love (like Methane Studios and Dan Stiles), artists that we love and now know (like Tad Carpenter from Vahalla Studios, Kii Arens from La-La Land Posters,  and Bobby Dixon from Kollective Fusion), and artists that we didn’t know and now love (like Nate Duval, Hero Design StudioUKPA, and Sonnenzimmer), it was an event of epically radically proportions.

Flatstock kicked off the SXSW Music festivities on March 14, and what better way to celebrate one of the country’s hugest music festivals than to check out the history of gig posters presented by the American Poster Institute? Over 3 days, this free and open-to-the-public event featured over 100 artists with techniques ranging from retro psychedelia to contemporary lowbrow art. With that humongous span, it ensured there was definitely something for everyone! (We certainly didn't leave empty-handed...) Since 2002, Flatstock has taken place all over the world, and Flatstock 33 surely raised the bar for those practicing the revered art of the gig poster today.

Wheatpaste was super stoked to attend Flatstock, and hope that any sucker gig poster enthusiast unable to attend will flip through our pics and discover some dope new artists. Enjoy!
