Mark Allen Miller Q+A

Mark is an illustrator + painter living and working in Southern California. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Mark began working as an illustrator and showing in numerous galleries. His influences include nature, machinery, modern architecture, science, and candy. He lives in a tiny house in SoCal, with his lovely wife Karen, their little son Henry, and their three giant dogs.

Wheatpaste Art Collective: There aren’t a lot of SoCal natives, but you studied here and currently reside here. Are you originally from Southern California?
Mark Allen Miller: Yes, born and raised here in Southern California.

WP: If you weren’t an artist, what would be your profession?
MAM: I think my son would like me to be a train engineer, so I'd pick that so we could hang out more (plus, it just seems like a really sweet job).

WP: Reading any good books?
MAM: It's a Little Golden Book entitled The Train to Timbuctoo.

WP: A lot of your illustration work (especially your collection with Wheatpaste) seems to reference scientific material, whether it be the subject matter or use of icons and layouts often found in publications. What draws you towards nature, biology, machinery, etc. for inspiration?
MAM: I just really love all that stuff and how it's all connected.

WP: Take us through your creation process. Is it digital, hand-drawn, etc.?
MAM: All of the above.

WP: Who are some of your favorite artists working today?
MAM: A few of my favorites are the Clayton Brothers, Lari Pittman and AJ Fosik.

WP: Would you rather be able to breathe underwater, go back or forwards in time, or be able to fly?
MAM: I pick flying.

WP: Favorite candy?
MAM: Zotz.
